a good non mainstream firewall for windows

I am looking to upgrade my lynksys router or computer software to a more secure firewall. I suspect non mainstream firewalls may be more secure just because few learn how to break into something few use.

I use XP.

Since you mentioned possibly replacing your router, you might look into an open source router called "Vyatta" (link to download here). The only drawback is that you'll need a spare computer to run it on with at least 2 network cards. Also, you'll need to do a lot of configuring to get everything setup and working properly, such as the firewall. It might be overkill, as it's comparable and in some ways better than a Cisco router.

Of course, if you're not willing to spend a lot of time learning how to configure and setup a router/firewall, then you're probably better off choosing a software firewall. I'd recommend the following software from comodo.

Thanks! You were thorough. I am familiar with Comodo. I had tried their freeware but ran into a problem with the initial virus scan. It was very slow and I have a great deal of disk space. It was taking days and there was a power failure before it completed so it didn't fuully instal. Hopefully the paid for version will be smarter.

Having a real fire wall is a bit much for a 2 user system even though I have enough junk computers that I could spare one. It is not out of the question. I would get crap from my wife that I was waisting electricity.
