PAL Video Displayed as 360x288 instead of 720x576

All of my PAL AVI files which when opened in VirtualDub are reported as 720x576 and displayed as 720x576

However when I use 'Nero 6 Show Time' or 'ATI File Player' to view them the video size is reduced to 50% i.e. 360x288.

I've checked the obvious e.g. the application viewing size, in both cases it is set to 100% (actually Nero Show Time only seems to have two options 'Full Size' or 'Full Screen'

The interesting thing is that if I convert the AVI file to mpg using TMPGEnc it then displays correctly in both Nero and ATI File Player.

Does anybody know why this should be? I know its not critical but its rather bugging me.
