Xbox LIVE sound problem

So since I put Call Of Duty: World At War in the disc tray to play the day it came out, I can't hear anybody on Xbox LIVE apart from people on my friends list. I thought it may have been a problem with my old headset but I got a new one yesterday and it's still the same. I've messed with the sound preferences and still nothing. It's really annoying. Help would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
