PBC problem on VCD?

I am putting jpg files onto VCD and playing them back on my DVD player. If I only include a small number of jpgs (<50ish) everything works fine including the menus but if I include a larger number (eg >300 jpgs)the PBC function on my DVD is disabled and the VCD won't run.

I usually use Ulead PictureShow but have had the same results with Nero, Roxio and VCDEasy. I have found that the problem VCD works fine on Panasonic and Mustek DVDs but not on my own Thomson or on a Pioneer.

Only ideas? - help please.
