I've been using Shrink as my compression/burner forever (since the days when Decrypter was still live and the hottest ripper around). I now use AnyDVD as my main ripper, and am pretty happy with it (not perfect, but best I've found). I still use Shrink, but am sorely tempted to try CloneDVD (especially as they are changing from one time purchase to subscription 1/1/09, but letting the folks who bought by 12/31/08 to get free updates for life without paying for the subscription). I just don't know much about the program. Does it burn? Is the video quality as good as Shrink compressed DVDs? Is it easy to use (I need things really simple)? Anybody that has used both programs, if you can give me a good comparison of features/pros/cons, I'd really appreciate it.

Hi, my friends here tell me CloneDVD (quality) is about the same as dvd shrink. CloneDVD was made specifically to be used inconjunction with Anydvd, so ease of use is better than dvd shrink.
But for maximum quality, instead of a transcoding program, try an encoding program as dvd rebuilder instead (free too !), but take more time on the pc.
Hope this helps and Merry Christmas !

If you want a free transcoder, then stick with DVD Shrink. Just make sure to use "Deep Analysis + Compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation: Maximum Smooth or Max Sharp" via DVD Shrink's "Quality Settings".
If you have Nero 7, 8 or 9 (Nero Recode 2, 3 or 4), then I highly recommend Nero Recode. As far as I know, Recode is the best transcoder out there, it's nearly twice faster than DVD Shrink and still produce high quality when use "Advanced Analysis + High Quality Mode + Assign Best Quality to Main Movie".
However, if you want to go with an encoder engine, then there's no doubt DVD-Rebuilder Pro + CCE/CCE SP2 or ProCoder or HC is the best choice.
I've been using DVD-Rebuilder Pro + CCE SP2 for ages and all my backups looks great on my 51" SONY HDTV (1080i, 720p and 480p) for movies/backups that required a lot of compression (i.e. 20% or higher).
For movies/backups that required 1% -> 19% compression needed, I'll simply use Nero Recode 3 and it's doing a wonderful job.

Is it necessary to use the CCE program with the Rebuilder, or will the Rebuilder work alone?

My understanding is nero recode is shrink, nero bought the rights or he went to work for them after the crap that went down, the only bit missing is the ripping part

I use HC Encoder as well, and have excellent results with my back-ups. I also follow alkohol's process in regards to compression percentages and choice of programs used with those percentages. Rebuilder for anything of high compression and DVD Shrink (as opposed to recode) with Deep Analysis + Compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation for the lesser compressed movies.

Thanks for the comments. I also checked out the CloneDVD guide on Afterdawn, which has helped me get a feel for the process used for cloning a DVD. It appears that Shrink may be the more user friendly of the two programs (especially with the preset Nero autoburn). Some of the other programs mentioned sound pretty good - but considering my technical ignorance, I'd probably be best sticking with what I know for now.
I would toss out for discussion whether Slysoft's CD dubbing program is any good. That is another program I'm curious about. My Phillips stereo CD recorder bit the dust and I've only made two CDs from my computer thusfar with MediaPlayer. Do I need a program for dubbing CDs or is MediaPlayer sufficient?

The author/creator of DVD Shrink is now with (Ahead) Nero Recode and Recode updates regularly to enhance it's quality, performance and engine.
Therefore, Nero Recode is the winner.

Pariah: I'm using DVDShrink with AnyDVD and life is good! I also own DVDClone... but don't use it much... I like being able to hear the sound when I preview a track... DVDClone does not have audio at all. Hope this helps... Merry CHRISTmas to you and yours.
