Snes Station Compatibility better with CD or USB

I recently got an internal HDD and have been running some old SNES roms via USB. However there are sound and speed issues. This is a major bummer for me, as really the main reason I got the HDD is to play old roms. Will I have better compatibility if I use CD instead of the USB to play roms?

Also, does anyone know if the Snes Station project is dead?
