I've been getting the message a lot lately "Please Put this disc into a 360".. last time it did this.. I took it apart and readjusted the Pot.. so after finally getting tired of getting this message over and over again lately.. I decided I'd do it again.. I took it apart.. adjusted the pot just a fraction.. and put it back together.. now I can't get the disc to spin.. so I think i messed up my 360.
I'm considering going and buying an arcade tonight.. and putting my hard drive on it. But is my old 360 fixable.. what did I do to make it stop spinning

Yeah thats what I did.. got it for $33 after shipping. Figure I'll just replace the boards so I don't have to fix the key. In the meantime I didn't wanna wait for the part so I bought an Arcade.. was hoping for a Jasper but ended up with a Falcon.. I may take it back though cause it keeps locking up.
Once the drive comes in I'm going to give my old one to my dad.

SO I got my new drive in today.. I didn't wanna mess with updatign the keys/firmware and all that so I figured I'd just swap out the board from the original drive into the new one..
I turned it on and it won't read discs.. just says open tray.
what did I do wrong here.

Did you buy the same model and version drive? It has to be the same as your old one to just swap boards.

Oh man, your board may be dead. Sammys have a lot of problems, and this is one.
Do this, open the tray, put a disc in, put your ear as close as you can to the drive, and close the tray. See if you can hear it trying to spin up. If you don't hear it trying to spin, your board is f'd.

Well I know thats what it was doing when I decided to buy a new drive... I figured it to be just the drive motor. So if the board is screwed then I have to do a whole firmware thing right?

Right.
There is always the possibility of a motor going bad. I repaired a Hitachi with a bad motor. But you having bought a new drive rules that out.
So yeah, you'll have to flash the new board. But that's really not a bad thing now that the new iXtreme 1.5 is out.

I had heard to use Maximus.. so which is better.. whats the easiest to use? I just got a brand new computer with Sata so it shouldn't be too hard but i'm not sure exactly what to do just yet. I know I hook up the drive to a sata cable to my computer while the power is to the drive still from the xbox.. does all of this work in DOS? how do i get my drive key? and since all i'm doing is giving it a new key will the system get banned on live?

Ah... so your old console wasn't modded? Which means you don't already have the key.
If not, and your drive board is, in fact, dead, then the only way to get the key is to remove the tsop from the board and have it read in a programmer.
The first thing you should try is to retrieve the key. There's a link in my sig.
