dvd drive trouble (or software?)

HELP. Kids played with computer and now there's a problem, Whenever I put a disc in the dvd drive, auto-run doesn't start, and when I click on the drive icon, I get a blank explorer window with another smaller window inside it. The smaller window has a 'burn disc' title and it asks if I want format the disk. Clicking 'next' gets a notice that the disc is write-protected and it closes. At this point I can access the disc by clicking on the drive icon, although auto-run still won't work. I've checked the auto run settings and all appear normal. I'm running windows vista 64 bit, 8 gb ram and 512 mb video card on an HP desktop with amd processor.This happens every time after computer startup.
