So far, we are still waiting for a real (or complete) media player for PSP that can play avi, mpg, mkv and such, right? Is converting really the only way we (modded PSP users) have of watching our movies or anime?

I'd say yeah unless you can find a home brew application which plays more video formats than the current firmware you have.
