Okay it's been confusing so I'm just gonna ask all the questions I have instead.

So this guy is telling me I can mod my xbox elite since I'm gotten it in October 2007 and he's offering to do it for a price but I don't want to pay him to do it, not because I'm cheap but just because I love tinkering with these things, I've repaired, jailbroken my psp and iphone myself so I would really like to do this myself as well. Anyways my question is if it's true what would be the easiest way for me to flash my DVD drive firmware? I read the thread about flashing your drive and it seems my drive is a hitachi drive (3 varied holes on drive tray).

Second question is, should I mod it? I don't care about xbox live and the modding experience is more important than playing the games but I do use my xbox for netflix purposes. If I mod this should I be concerned that I can't use my netflix live stream on my xbox anymore?

If anyone can answer my questions that'd be great thanks

I flashed mine. But it's up to you if it is worth doing. If you want to be able to play backups, then yeah, it's worth it. If you don't, then don't

Get textbook's guide. it's the easiest way for flashing.
