My wife want to buy the new acer mini netbook. This doesnt come with a dvd/cd drive. I am wondering can i copy my dvd movies onto the hard drive with dvd shrink and/or decrypter without taking up much had drive space and being able to have the computer read that file so she can watch it on her netbook?

Have you considered an external hard drive ? Up to 500 Gb are available and resonably priced too ?

the point of her netbook is that she wants to travel light. She doesnt want to have to carry a externall hard drive or external dvd drive.

I have one of these Acer netbooks, the 120GB hard drive version. I take it you have the 8GB Solid State Drive version ? hence not wanting to use up all the space ?

As to cd/dvd drives, i have loads of them in USB2.0 enclosures and just hook up one when needed.

And as per bryston you can do the same with hard drives, i have loads of those in USB2.0 enclosures too.

Movie files compressed by dvd shrink run about 4464 Mb.Files done by dvd decrypter are full size, no compression.

As I read your question - I have a question - "doesnt come with a dvd/cd drive" >>> How are you going to rip the movie? Now, if you have this Netbook networked, you could copy as many movies onto her hard drive as you can get on there but you will need a codec to read the movie files. To get more movies on the hard drive than the previous answer (compressed by dvd shrink run about 4464 Mb) you could convert them to AVI's and get about 4 times more movies - but then you would need a codec for avi - like DivX.
