I'm looking to connect my PS3 to an old home theatre system. It says that its capable of digital audio. It has S/PDIF in and S/PDIF out slots at the back. Is this what I need? http://www.monoprice.com/products/produc...&seq=1&format=2 Do I also need to get a toslink and S/PDIF cable? If so which ones should I get?

This is the receiver. http://www.search.philips.com/search/sea...l&l=us_en&h=all I'm not sure which one it is.

Yes, you will need that converter.
See these S/PDIF cables, and buy the length you need:

i have a similar related problem but i am not sure if this is the same product i need. I have my PS3 hook up to my receiver using the red & white. my receiver doesn't have a digital optical port. It doesn't have any type of HD (component or HDMI) video ports to make things a whole lot easier by running everything from the receiver. I've come to a conclusion that the best thing to do to get my 360 hooked (since the red & white are too far away from receiver) up as well is to use some kind of converter or adapter for my receiver to allow digital optical input. I also would like to get my Wii hooked to it as well. not sure what would be the best thing to do.

the model of my receiver is a Sony STR-DE515. Thanks for the help

A digital optical input can't be put on a receiver that doesn't have a processor to handle it. You just need a new receiver..........

or i can just get a coupler b/c i already have rca extension cables. btw i did find the adapter i am looking for but the coupler is the best thing to go with (well it is cheaper). If i wanted to buy a new receiver, it would have to support 9.1. i got this sony receiver for free so for now i can live with it.
