Okay.. So, to start off, I am fairly new to this whole concept of 'modding your PS2'. The idea only popped into my head after I was thinking about ways to play PS2 games on my emulator on my laptop without having to up my hardware to play it successfully. I thought to myself, "I wonder if I can somehow hook up my laptop HDD with all my ISO Playstation games on it to my regular PS2 and play it that way"..

It seems so obvious, why not just play your regular CD PS2 games on your PS2.. And there's 2 reasons for that. One being that most of my PS/PS2 games are scratched to hell and back. I highly do not believe in piracy, but I have acquired the ISO's from the internet, only for games that I own however, and as well as this fact, it will be damn cool just to have a HDD hooked up to my PS2 = )

So, moving on to my question.. Firstly, I vaguely understand the concept of equipping your HDD to your PS2, but if anyone could reitereate on that, that would be great. As well as that, say perhaps I buy a new 300 GB HDD for my PS2, hook it up to my laptop and get it all formated and such, what would be the next step to take to get all of my ISO files put onto my PS2 HDD? I mean, I wouldn't bother asking normally, but I don't know how it would work seeing as the HDD has to be formated a different way from a normal computer HDD. Anyways, lastly of all.. Can anyone link me perhaps a thread somewhere with a listing of a bunch of possible mods? I've searched around briefly and I'll do so again, I haven't found much yet though.

Anywho, thanks humbly in advance!

it's already been done. i've had mine for almost two years, but it's been longer since this was done.

google for winhiip. the last version i believe is 1.7.6. that will format the HDD and allow you to transfer the games onto it.

second, you will need hdloader or usbadvanced. if you have a fat ps2, the recommended is hdloader; highest game compatability out of all programs. if you have a slim ps2, you're stuck with usbloader. due to the ps2 limit of usb1.1, it'll be jittery.

if you have a fat, you will also need the network adapter. you should be able to find them used for around $20. and the hard drive must be IDE. western digital drives must have the network adapter modded to fit.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

Okay.. so, let me list what I think this whole process is, and you tell me if I'm right, okay?

Step 1: Buy 300 GB (Maxtor most likely)
Step 2: Download winhiip and format the HD. (Is there any special connections, or will I just hook up my IDE cable to the HD and use the software?).
Step 3: Transfer all the games from my original laptop HD to my new external Maxtor HD. (Again, not sure what the actual connection is/looks like..).
Step 4: Download HDLoader and put it on my external Maxtor HD. (I'm assuming this is just the GUI for the PS2 so I can select my games from the HD?).
Step 5: Buy Network Adapter for my PS2 and hook up the HD. (Again, not sure what the actual cables/connections are. Also, what is the purpose of the Network adapter, I figured the connection from the HD to the PS2 would be USB or something..).

Oh man.. I just found something that is very disappointing. I read that you can't play PSX games with HDLoader. Is there some kind of fix or remedy to this with a patch or some kind of chip?

psx games off the hdd is not possible. hdloader is only for ps2 games.

seeing that you have a fat ps2, you need the network adapter because it powers and connects the hdd to the ps2.

as for hdloader, there are two methods; exploit or buying a retail disc.

the exploit requires a ps1 game, a ps2 memory card, and a cheating device with usb support. i prefer action replay max.

I have heard a few things about the exploit, not exactly sure what it is or how you do it though. Also, I have heard a few different things about HDLoader.. One is that it costs 120$ for the official version.. And then there are versions you can download etc.. off the internet. I'm not much of one for piracy, but 120$ really REALLY seems jacked up for a piece of software that uses Sony's game system without even having their permission.. I think I'll be downloading it or something, any recommendions for a specific version number?

I was thinking about .08b or something that has patch fixes for games like God of War and allows HD's larger than 137 GB. As well as this, per se I do download the program or something, what do I need to do, just put it on a DVD disc as an ISO file and put it into the PS2 and take it from there? I have heard that you need a mod chip if you want to download the free version in order for it to work..

I am trying to take the cheapest route here. So far, to my knowledge, I need a HDD(30-50$ off of newegg.com), HDLoader(most likely the free version), and a PS2 Network Adapter(20-30$) with the slight possiblity of needing a stupid mod chip(no clue what price though) to get the HD working.. Now, to get my games from my laptop onto the HD, I will need a USB to IDE cable which is in the range of 20$, and then winhiip(free, thankfully!). Now, all in all, this is looking to be around 100$, which isn't too bad..

But as I said before, I don't know if I'm going to need the mod chip for the free version to work or not.. I really have no intentions of paying 120$ for just the CD though, so yeah..

with the downloaded version, you will always want the latest. i still use 0.8b, but 0.8c has been out. there's a few fixes in the newer one. but i have never heard of retail discs going that high. i've seen them around $20-25.

a modchip is not necessary; only useful if you want to go all out. just find a cheating device with usb support.

exploit is somewhat complicated. you take the id number from a psx game, and build a exploit file with that id. in it are programs that will run off the memory card; hdloader, emulators, utilities, etc.

when you load the exploit onto the ps2 card and load the psx game, the system will bypass the psx disc and boot off the memory card; there's a security flaw with psx games, hence the exploit.

Neat =D I think I understand everything now. One last question though. Is there an exploit to also make the HD able to play movies as well?

that, i'm not sure of. sole purpose of my hdd is strictly for games.

Okay.. So I am getting ready to go out and buy my stuff for HDLoader today. I need to double check my understanding of what I need. As I see it, the steps now are:
1)Buy HD.
2)Buy USB to IDE/Sata cable.
3)Buy network adapter for my V4 PS2.
4)Download HDLoader.
5)Download winhiip.
6)Lastly, follow the steps at this site: http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/94/62/

Now, this is where I am uncertain. As stated in that link above, the things I will need the following:

PSX (PS1) game of your choice. I use Gran Turismo in this tutorial.
PSX or PS2 memory card with 2mb space free.
Blank CD-r
Official Network AdapterOne computer Hard drive (Check here for the compatibility list)
Nero Burning Rom (I use version 5.5.10.42 found here http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=nero)
Filepack

However, the tutorial goes on to later state..
Quote:

You will need a way to boot your CD-r you have just created in your PS2. I used the

Swap Magic 2.0 CD loader and it worked perfectly.

Note from Spuzz:

a few users have told me that their gamesharks (gamshark2 v2 or below) will work too.

you need to boot the cogswap loader first, then boot the the installation cd-r). you can

download the cogswap loader here. i cant help you with the gameshark if you have any

problems.

v8/v9/v10 ps2 users cannot use the SM2 (swap magic 2.0) CD on their ps2's, but they can

use their SM2 DVD's.

here is the install process: boot up your SM2 DVD, swap in the cogswap loader dvdr,

eject in an original ps2 cd game,

and then swap in the exploit install cd-r

Now, my question is this.. What do I freaking need here that is free, lol? I don't care if they just forgot to list this at the top of the tutorial where it states what you will need, so long as it doesn't cost me money. The way I'm seeing it, I have 3 options for booting the CD-R that I made.
A)Use a modchip
B)Use swapmagic 2.0
C)Use cogswap

Now, modchips cost money, so I want to avoid that. Swapmagic costs money, but there is the possibility of downloading it. However, I am hearing that it doesn't matter if you download it because it won't work, you'll need an original swapmagic to boot up the pirated swapmagic, which defeats the purpose.. However, cogswap is free to my knowledge. However, I am unaware of what is needed for it, I am thinking this is the one that uses the cheating device, which will also cost money. Can anyone confirm this?

Bump. Also, I have my new Jupiter 250 GB IDE hard drive.
Also, something else curious just popped into my head.. If you are capable of formatting your PS2 HD via a USB to IDE cable with winhiip and installing games that way as well, why the hell can't you install a copy of HDLoader onto the HD that way as well?
