PS3 vs Xbox 360 - which is best ? (i don't want to search for myself)

Hi
Thinking of getting an xbox 360 or a playstation 3. the 300 quid ps3 doesn't sound to appealing compared to just 100 quid for a xbox 360 but what are the main differences?
I know the ps3 has a blu-ray player built in but other than that it plays games just like an xbox. is that right?
i want to be able to play high def films from it can it do this? Can i just buy an external hdd for it or do i have to buy an expensive MS one?
a website will do for me if you know a link or if you have the time i need the ins and outs of why to get an xbox over a ps3.

Oh wow Martin280 you posted a link to a website i could have found myself which is more than a year old, thank you sooooo sooo much what would i have done without your googling help!!!
Anyways i'm starting to figure out the main differences now just trying to decide which one to buy. On one hand i need a new media centre type machine for my tv to play films etc but i just have a problem with spending 300 quid on a ps3 and there is a lot more modding that can be done on an xbox. Why can't the 360 do all that media stuff to! :)

The 360 can do all the "media stuff",except play blu-ray movies, all together the 360 in my opinion is a much better deal,its way cheaper, has a huge library with a lot of great games,good online service,and it can be modded,the ps3 is ridiculously expensive,doesn't have a big library of solid games,online service not very good, and it cant be modded. I've had both systems and was really disappointed with the Ps3, and ending up selling it. Using the 360 as a media center works great,you can play most formats, and stream movies to it from your computer, or plug a flash drive in and watch them from that,and not just movies,you can also do the same with music and pictures. what "media stuff" did you think it couldn't do?

yes i agree with the guy above me, get the xbox 360. i am always encouraging my friends to get xbox 360 so we can play on lives.

thanks cky4987 you answered most the questions i was after pretty much. i couldn't find out exactly what it could do it terms of a media centre. didn't know you could stream or play movies from a flash drive which is very good. Am i right in thinking that the xbox upgrades the picture from a dvd movie to make it more like a hd picture or did i make that up lol. considering i didn't make it up does that work for a streamed movies to?
also will it play a streamed hd film?

It won't upgrade the quality of the dvd picture, but if you have an HDTV and have the xbox hd cables connected to it, it will look a lot better as apposed to standard definition, and as far as streamed hd film goes, as long as its in the right format yes,im pretty sure you can download blu-ray rips that are xvid format and the xbox 360 supports xvid. also about the hard drive, if you get an xbox 360 arcade you can get a 20gb hard drive from microsoft for $20 if the deal is still going on that they had, and once you have that, you can do a small mod to upgrade it to a 120gb hard drive, and it only costs 50 bucks instead of paying 200 or some dollars for the official microsoft one.

simple answer xbox 360 if you get the hd dvd player it upscales any way so happy days for around 30 quid

Then skip both and get a Popcorn Hour. It's cheaper than the 360 and in regards to playback, it blows both consoles out of the water.

The xb360 supports xvid and divx from a usb flash/hard drive? I thought you had to do some questionable transcoding via VLC over the network to play divx and xvid on there. I'll be testing that out in a few minutes.

Update: I just tested it and it does support divx, but not x264 (.mkv) files. You will have to have an Xbox Live account and download an update for this to work. I assume a banned xbox would not be able to get the update.
Note: If you dont have a live account dont use the same name as your save game profile or it's going to erase all your saved games. Woe is me.
