Can you suggest any good (free?) software that would allow me to burn a .mpg (mpeg-2) file onto DVD for playback on my LCD TV?

Dvd flick should allow you to convert from mpeg to dvd compliant files.

Does DVD Flick convert without encoding, definite quality loss there if not? If you have it, NeroVision Express burn's them, seem to remember "enable smart encoding" needed to be checked at more>video options>general at the bottom. If mpg isn't something you usually burn, your best bet might be a trial of an authoring software or watch them on your pc; I use Ulead MovieFactory but it isn't free, I don't know of any that are myself.

DVD Flick does have the option not to re-encode mpeg2 video streams:

Thanks, folks. What an excellent suggestion that I go for DVD Flick. I've got it installed and the comment regarding the option NOT to re-encode mpeg2 video streams is also useful - I guess there's no need to re-encode .mpeg-2's created through my ProShow slideshow.
