Hi, I was wondering if you all could help yet again. I am looking to replace my Hitachi-LG Drive from my launch 360 for a BenQ because the one I have now is so damn load and it's beginning to not read the discs but first I have a few questions. First, I learned enough when modding original Xboxs to figure out how to replace the drive by spoofing the firmware from my old DVD drive to a new one, my first question is can I use the firmware/key from my Hitachi drive with the new BenQ drive? And if not, is there a step by step around here to help me switch DVD drives? Thanks ahead of time!

well in order to swap a drive you need the your old drive key. what you are going to do is, read the firmware and save the orig.bin file, now you are going to open up your hitachi firmware in toolbox 4.6 copy the key, now close and open benq firmware in toolbox and go the drive key and paste the hitachi key where the benq key is and your all good.

Alright, so you're positive that there won't be any problem using a completely different type of DVD Drive with my original firmware from the Hitachi Drive? Oh and the only thing I do not get is how to put the drive into mode B after you have it connected to a PC, is there any tut to help with that? Also I saw something on 360-hq about having to have a specific type of SATA, does that mean I can't do it with a USB to SATA cable? I've googled and can't seem to find one.

I would never switch a Hitachi drive for a BenQ. You don't really need to mess up with the firmware and spoofing etc to correct your Hitachi. The advantage of Hitachis vs. BenQ's is that the internal parts of the Hitachis are easily interchangeable and no soldering is required. I can assure you that changing and calibrating your Hitachi's laser len will solve all reading discs errors. In the Hitachis, everything is pre-wired with plug-in flat cuords, which you can easily remove on and off as needed. In contrast, the every single little cable inside the BenQ's are individually soldered, thus, doing very simple things such as replacing the laser or maybe replacing the spindle is a pretty daunting task. IMO a Hitachi drive most of the time can be resucitated, whereas in the Benq's once they start giving trouble the drive is done!
Really, find the tuts at llama.com or google for the tuts on how to replace and calibrate the Hitachi, and with little patience you'll accomplish the same without the risk of bricking your drive.

good luck
