Help catching up with the scene

So i've had a Wii for years but have literally not played it once since the release of super paper mario almost 2 years ago. At that time i had just installed a wiikey, installed firmware 2.1E i believe and had updated the chip firmware too, all in all i was completely up-to-date. Due to work i didnt really have time to play the wii and even the opening up of the virtual console games couldnt entice me.

However now with more free time and cousins to entertain i was wondering what i would need to do to catch up to the scene. I am aware there are new wii updates but i was wondering which update is the best to use and how i would install it. Furthermore are there any new protection methods within the games (legal backups of course - but sometimes from different regions) themselves that could potentially ruin my system?

Also what new developments have come into the scene since i left?

I realise this may be a huge question and have tried looking for information myself but im feeling like im in the deep end so a leg up would be a real help. Just someone to sum it up and provide a few links to information/tutorials would be great and i can continue myself from there.

The only things you'll need to do are update your wiikey to 1.9s to get around the copy protection on games since super mario galaxy and update your wii to 3.2 as some homebrew probably will not run on 2.1

Other than that you can just follow any of the guides on doing just about anything.
