I just bought my wii last week and when it asked me to update to 3.4 I said yes. From what i read, it looks like 3.3 would be more beneficial. Correct?

Unless you do homebrew it dosent really matter. If you do homebrew or intend to then you can follow any of the guides on downgrading.
