is there a way to get good quality dvds of movies that are "now playing" in theatres.

Legally, the only way is to purchase a print from a studio at atmospheric prices. But that was not what you wanted to hear I believe.

Otherwise the only legal way is to wait for the film to come out to dvd/BD

I forgot, if you become an Academy member, you get dvd screeners of Oscar contenders for your own viewing.
