I'm a newbie to PSP, and have looked in the ultimate sticky, but I'm still confused.

My GF got a psp for xmas.
It says it's a 2001 (and is obviously a slim).

It has a 4.0 firmware already, but since it's 2001 and not 3000, I'm not sure if it has that new motherboard.

Does the firmware stop it from being modded? Or is it only that v3 motherboard I've read about?

Also, she bought Star Ocean, which wants to upgrade the firmware to 4.xx (something or another). Should she do that?

I know I can't make a pandora battery, so I bought one.

Basically I need to know if we can still mod her PSP or if it's already past the area of known modding?

Go for it. The firmware just helps identify which motherboard you have. Since you have the 2001 you should be good.

Mod it first - see this guide link. Once you do that you'll be on the latest and no need to update the firmware through the game.

So I'm going to go ahead with this soon.

To get this straight:

If the PSP is a new motherboard, could it brick the PSP? Or will the installation of the custom firmware just fail?

AFAIK the installation will just fail.

You might just want to run the identifier 1st - if it turns out to be one then I wouldn't waste the time trying to mod it right now. Then you might as well up date the ofw for the game and then sit back and wait for the mod.
