How do I softmod new wii?

I got kids new Wii for xmas and they have already trashed one of their games. Is there any way to softmod the wii without chipping it and invalidating guarantee so I can backup the games onto dvd. I have read that it depends on firmware but how do I find out what firmware theirs runs on. My computer running xp also doesn't recognize game and been told I need an old LG drive installed in my computer.
Would be grateful for any help.

Its not as complete as other guides but does offer up-to-date links. If you need more detailed instructions look up one of the older guides.

And to back up the games on your PC you do need a special LG drive that is no longer made, but you can back up the game via wifi using the wii's DVD drive as well. Guide is here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/701082
