d2pro 9wire region free(ntsc playing pal)

a friend of mine recently asked me chip there new wii which they had bought 2nd hand off ebay. when i went to do the mod i found that it was an american ntsc console. i fitted a d2pro 9 wire as the write ups say it makes the wii region free.
they have been using it to play UK pal backups and have no problems with most games. however when some games are started the screen just goes black and the console has to be turned off and the on again. also some original pal games wont work on it, wii fit and mario kart.
is there anything i can do to help them or is it a case of they should have checked that it was a pal console before buying.
any help would be most appreciated
