I flashed my BenQ drive about nine months ago and I accidentally formatted the thumb drive I used to flash it with and consequentially lost my original firmware (I was smart enough to save all the other firmwares I did for people, but lost my own). Will I need my original firmware to update my drive to 1.5 or should I be able to just make the jump from 1.41 without it?

I just updated without it using iprep. Though can't confirm thats the safest way.

You don't need your original firmware. However you will need to dump the current firmware on your drive in order to extract your drive's key from it. You can do this in Jungle Flasher. Once you've got your key make backups of it EVERYWHERE to make sure that you don't lose that key in the future because without that key your Xbox 360 won't ever play games again.
