I just bought a wii yesterday 26th and ran the most current update. Do I have to own the zelda game for the twlight hack to work? or can I rent it? Is it a one time thing? Also, can I get homebrew installed on the newest firmware? If so, what do I need to install afterwards? Where is the newest guide on here for the newest software and best boot loader? Then I just burn with nero? I have a SD card already.
Welcome Iceman29. I'm a noob, but I've just been through what you're asking for the last few weeks. I'll tell you that all your information is here - please search the board and take time to read the links in the "Read This Second" Sticky. It takes some time - I spent about 8 hours reading before starting the process of downgrading and installing everything. However, I'm up and running great with the help of folks on this site, so I'll try to answer the questions posed.

You should be at version 3.4. To check, click on the wii button lower left corner, wii settings, and look at upper right corner. This is unfortunate, as it creates a need to do a couple of extra steps (=more reading to make sure you know what you're doing)

You only need the Zelda game once. You can rent or borrow it. The only reason to use the zelda hack is to install the homebrew channel. NOTE that because you have version 3.4, you have to use a different file for the zelda hack. Make sure you have the right one.

Follow this guide to downgrade your wii after you get the homebrew channel installed:

While some posts I've read say you can use nero, most suggest using Imgburn. It's free - just google it.
Good luck. And remember to search first and then ask. If you're brand new to this as I was, there's a learning curve -- but it's worth it.
This is what I thought. Why do some people say to downgrade the firmware and others do not? From what I've read it will still work as long as I get homebrew installed. I'll pickup zelda tonight from blockbuster and see what I can do.
