I have a macbook pro and have been trying to make a successful 360 backup for some time now with no success. I have tried osx360, iburn 360, and have recently tried Imgburn in Windows via VMware Fusion.

My 360 is running ixtreme 1.4 (maybe 1.3x), has a Samsung drive in good working order, I use only Verbatim DL dvds made from Singapore, and my dvd burner is a DL Lacie Lightscribe which I believe is actually a Samsung burner.

I have read through several forum posts and tried several different methods in which I finally learned how to fix my images through abgx360 and so I am confident my 360 game images are good. After I run abgx360 with all the right settings and get an image that is fixed or proper (everything comes out green) I then use Imgburn with all the correct settings; booktyped to a Samsung DVD-ROM setting, with the proper layer break, etc. After I burn the disc(s) I pop them into my 360 and I either get the open tray error, a game that starts up and then quickly gets a dirty disc error, or nothing at all. I know my 360 can play backups since I have a few backups that I acquired last year that work just fine, but now I am trying to backup my own and about 20 coasters later I am still without one working backup.

Would using Imgburn in Windows via a mac somehow not work properly? I bought by dvd burner about three or four years ago and I've read that Samsung drives don't support bitsetting so would getting a new burner perhaps solve my problem? I feel I'm getting closer to having success but I just wanted to get anyone's feel to as what my next best step might be.

-Much appreciation from a mac user.

well you're in luck. I have a computer which I built that I have one partition used for flashing and making backups (it's triple booting with xp, vista, and ubuntu), but I have a macbook pro that I use for my laptop.

I also run windows xp in vmware fusion.

I use my mac to make almost every single backup, stealth check, and burn. I really only use my desktop occasionally, or for flashing. So the mac is where I do everything else.

I have my kreon drive (which is internal put inside a case to make it external) hooked up via usb to my macbook pro. I rip my games with schtrom, and then check anything I have with abgx 360. All of that will work fine.

Burning I will typically use imgburn, but I also use clonecd. I have never used a "mac app" for burning my 360 games. So I only burn a game in a VM with imgburn. 95% of the time I'll use imgburn, and every once in a while I'll use clonecd.

But I can confirm that it will all work, because it does for me.

So try it out, and if you have any other questions, I'll do my best.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am glad that someone can confirm making working backups with a mac via VMware actually works.

I've tried burning a few backups using imgburn via VMware but haven't had any luck, which leads me to believe my external burner may be the issue. Do you use the macbook pro internal dvd drive to make your backups or do you use an external? If using the matshita drive that the macbook pros have is there any type of bitsetting I have to check when using imgburn? I figured my external lacie burner would be hands down better than my macbook pro dvd drive, but maybe not.

Thanks again.

I use the internal drive on the macbook pro when burning games on my laptop. It's about 90% of my games are burned on my laptop, 10% on my desktop. So yeah, I use that internal drive.

One thing of note, I will usually get an error when I start imgburn, it will say like a boundary error. However, I just click the X in the top right corner (instead of clicking ok or cancel) and then the program goes on to burn the game and it works fine.

I think I am getting closer to a successful burn. I ran my image through abgx360 and everything came out fine, I used imgburn via VMware Fusion with the correct layer break, and then burned my disc using my macbook pro internal dvd drive. When I put the disc in my 360 it loaded fine and looked like it was going to play without problems and then when the cut scenes started it began to pause and skip intermittently and then eventually completely froze.

Any other suggestions on how to get a successful burn without all the skipping and freezing? I have the imgburn log of my burn, maybe there is something someone can see that I am not noticing.

Also, would putting the game directly onto my hard drive improve my chances of getting the game to work or should I just scratch my entire 360 and get a new Jasper model and flash it with ixtreme 1.5?

Thanks for all the help.

Yeah, the ones made in Singapore. I've gone through 20 coasters so far.

wow. It honestly might be with your burner, or your reader. Are either very old?

Like I said, I'm running pretty much the exact same setup as you are. So I know that they can burn from within windows in a VM using the mac burner.

I have however just converted an old internal burner into an external burner to use with my mac. But still, I never had any coasters when burning with the mac.

My macbook pro is pretty new, about a year old and my reader on my 360 was replaced about a year ago with a Samsung drive, but I have hardly used it since I got it replaced so I know it's in good shape and working.

And since the backups I have acquired elsewhere in the past work on my 360 I am pretty confident it can read backups properly, it's just not working on the backups I have since been trying to make on my own. So I either have faulty hardware, the wrong settings in my software, or my 360 is very particular on how the backups are made.

I am not entirely sure what version of ixtreme I am running, it is definitely not over 1.4 so on abgx360 I have checked the adjust angle 359 for ixtreme >1.4. Not sure if that would make much of a difference or not.

What type of Matshita drive do you have in your macbook pro? I have the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J. I wonder if the certain matshita drives perform differently in regards to burning backups. If so, I am thinking about getting the pioneer dvr-x122. Does anyone know if that drive is good? Any other external drive recommendations?

Thx!

I'm at work now, but I'll have to look later and see which type of drive it is I have.

As for external, I've honestly used any type that I just had near me as long as it could burn dual layers, and I never had any issues.

Hallelujah!!! I finally got my first successful burn and did it using the internal matshita drive.

My backup loaded up just fine and there were a few intermittent pauses here and there but nothing too serious. I then decided to install it to my hard drive to see if I could alleviate the glitches and when I got to 68% it told me the disc was dirty. I didn't like that response so I tried again and it installed it 100% with no problems. The game plays like a champ now. I will continue to try some of my other backups but the fact that I finally had success is simply awesome.

Thanks so much for your help. It's nice to know it's all possible with the mac.

Not really. I burned one backup at 2.4x and one at 2x. They both seemed to work but the one burned at 2x speed seems to be a little less glitchy. I may have just gotten lucky but I'll test some more backups over the next several days before I conclude full success.

I tried my external drive one more time as well and all I get with that thing are open tray error discs. I'll stick with the matshita for now, and possibly upgrade to a pioneer in the near future. I'll keep you posted on things. Thanks again.
