Are you talking about home video or DVD movies?
As far as movies are concerned I can tell you exactly why people make changes to video. If you are like me then you want the best quality video that you can get off a movie.
I use DVDReMake Pro because I can remove all cells that I do not want and customize menu's. By the time I remove all the things I do not want then the movie size is reduced by quite a bit. I encode movies that are more than 70% in reduction. If the movie is at least 70% then I will transcode the movie.
Encode: DVD Rebuilder with CCE
Transcode: CloneDVD2 or Nero Recode
There is a big difference between transcode and encoding a movie. Many people do not realize this but the pixelation speaks for itself when it comes down to it. If you do not have a 65" HDTV then you may not notice the difference.

To make DVD, I use DVD Lab Pro, very flexible. This is not an editor, for that I use few different software, depend on the editing needs.

When I find something that works, I tend to stick with it until it no longer meets my needs.
For me, the combination of ConvertXtoDVD (for doing any necessary conversions) and TMPGenc DVD Author (for building the final DVD structure and adding menus) simply works - and works well.

I read the comments in this thread with great interest because I've been struggling with finding a tool that satisfies my limited needs. As TMPGEEnc Author has been mentioned a few times, I looked closer into that product. Somewhere I saw that the latest version is 3.1.2.176.
However when I went to the pegasys website, I found something called TMPGenc Authoring Works 4 that has been released sometime in 2008.
Should I assume that 4 is one step up from 3? Somehow the word "Works" made me suspicious. I remember that Microsoft once released somtheing called Works that was a cut down version of some of the Office programs, except that the output wasn't compatible with any of the 'real' programs. The Pegasys website doesn't mention anything about the relationship between Author 3 and Authoring Works 4. Can anybody shed some light on this?
TIA

Thanks for the hint, creaky.
I believe I've managed to find the comment you were thinking of. It's in this thread: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/721498
And Preshtigo says that Works 4 is the newest version of 3.
That clears up one of my questions.

I'm still using TMPGenc DVD Author 1.6 (the first version that supported DL).
I have found no reason to upgrade the Authoring program, but I did upgrade TMPGEnc Express to 4.0 for the better editing/encoding capabilities.
Best of all with TMPGenc, they have free trial software.
