Do the caches really matter how many MG there are in the processor.

and what do they do?

the more cache you have the faster the cpu is. It wont be significantly faster but 5-10%. The cache holds information that the cpu needs and is working on. If it has more it does not have to wait for the system to transfer the new information into the cache.
