i have a pre modded ps2 slim which is exhibiting some problems. It cannot run metal gear solid 3 and metal gear solid 2 after half the game. Netal gear solid 3 wont even boot, i get a non responsive black screen. But other games seem to work, i played narutimate accel, DBZ tenkaichi 3, tomb raider legends, and they seem to work. So whats the matter with my ps2? is the laser burned out?

Try cleaning your laser first. Take a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol, in a circular motion rub firmly but gently for about 30 secs.
Then take a dry q-tip and in same circualar motion for about 6-8 secs.

If that does not help, then I will ask what type of discs are used to burn the backups on.
What speed did you burn them at with what program.

i buy the games. And if the laser is burned out then no games should work right? But fighting games seems to work.

I am going to ignore where you said you "buy burned games"
You may want to edit that out of your post.

What type of media are they burned on. Sony, Verbatim

Your PS2 may not like them.

If your laser is playing most games just fine, doesn't mean it is burned out.
But it does help to clean it, and it will perform better.

What you can try once you have done that and if it still not working properly, is try to reburn the game yourself.

Use imgburn to back up the DVD and it will make an ISO file.
Then using imgburn again, burn the ISO to a disc at 4x speed.
Imgburn is free, just google it
