I am trading my xbox360 for some guys ps3. I like the deal i'm getting. I trade 1 controller, the consol, 20gb hdd + $75 for his 1 controller, Console with a 60 hdd. The deal did sound nice to me. But one problem is that he said on his email that he had a modded ps3. Now I have been out of the PS3 scene for a while but as far as I know, the PS3 cannot be modded yet. Do you think there is something wrong or am I just not caught up on the newest info about modding a ps3?

The PS3 has not been hacked yet to allow it to play PS3 backups.
The only real "mod" at the moment is the Swap Switch, which allows it to play PS1 an PS2 backups. See here for more info on it.
It would be best to check what you're getting with the guy first though, you dont want to end up getting ripped off.

He just emailed me back, he said it was called a "development chip" and it works on every ps3 and lets it play backups. For starters, i'm not happy that a chip was put in the system, it pretty much makes it useless for future games since i'm sure that there will be an update to counteract the chip. I always softmod my systems. Anyways, what do you think?

Nope.
Definitely dodgey. There are no chips or hacks for the PS3, and backups cannot be played. IOf they could, someone here would know about it. I'd definitely stay away from this one if i were you.

Why not just get him to show you how it plays backups, buy it from him, crack it open and give us pics? i'm sure if his allegations are correct, and it can play backups, then somebody (myself included) would be glad to buy it from you so you can buy an unmodded system.

The guy is full of crap, be very careful with this make sure you see the ps3 run properly and start up both dvd's and bluray disks if you are still wanting to go through with it.
Hes likely doing some kind of scam, but as long as its a fully functional 60gb model ps3 you're still getting the better deal. Just make sure you see the console running and reading disks properly, and check to see if the seal on the back is broken.
But still be very wary of this guy.

Actually there is a PS3 chip called the InFeCtuS but it does not exactly do what people think it would...it only really allows access to mess with the bios and some other minor things. There has been ALOT of talk of this or that by people in the scene but never really any solid proof.
As for this "dev chip" are you sure it is not a dev console? If so I would be interested in that myself and have a 20gb PS3 or a 20gb 360 I would be willing to trade. But I would definitely still be VERY skeptical. If you could go to his house and see it in action & working then that would ease some questions. Keep us informed as to what happens, plus are you in the states?

Yeah sounds dodgy to me too. If the guy lives nearby I'd go to his place make sure the system works. And if he really does have a PS3 which plays backup PS3 games he'd be selling that on ebay. I'm sure some people would pay upto twice the rrp to get their hands on something like that so that they can distribute the warez online and get the fame all these hackers are trying to get.
And arent teh dev console blue not black? Think someone posted a pic of it in anther thread.

ok, just to update every1 since you were all so interested because if it was really a modded ps3 then we would all be s***ing bricks. Anyways, I asked the guy to send me some vid footage of it working or let me come over to his house and let me see if it works and he has declined on both of those so I just said no to the deal, it ends there.
