I was watching this video tutorial here:

At the begining he has some device hooked up to his com port which he soldered to his lite-on drive.

I was a little surprised by this part as I have been following the 2008 guide and I did not suspect that I would need to attach the device to a COM port. What is that device he has? Is this necessary to have? Is there a guide on how to solder it to the drive?

Could someone please direct me to some of this information?

i wouldn't honestly follow that process. Read the GIANT 1.5 thread and around page 16 17 or 18 is the best process with links and such.
