Hi there

I'm new to the PSP modding scene, I just recently received a PSP from my sister which she bought on vacation in Hong Kong so please excuse my lack of knowledge on the whole issue.

The PSP is a 2000 series and it already had Custom Firmware on it when I received it. Being a total newbie, I decided to poke around the settings a bit, and downloaded and installed the latest official firmware (5.02). Obviously my problem now is to try and get it back to it's previous state :P

I've read up a bit on the numerous guides on the site, but I still feel a little bit lost. Particularly, I've read this guide but I think that's a guide more suitable for someone planning to mod their PSP from scratch. I hope to minimize the amount of damage I might do hence why I'm requesting for help before I try to do anything on my own.

I was planning to follow the steps in the above guide in (re)creating the magic memory stick (It's a 8GB memory stick btw), but do I have to do anything with the battery? I really have no clue on what the whole concept of the pandora battery is; what I'm really hoping for is that since the PSP already had CFW previously installed on it, doesn't that mean the battery is already "ready"?

Actually I found this forum after searching online and coming across this thread. I basically have the exact same problem, but want to make sure I don't have to buy a new battery, lol.

I'm very new to the PSP scene but I can answer some of this.

I believe you'll have to downgrade your firmware again, unless of course the update doesn't overwrite the special parts of the firmware. Someone else will need to verify.

You cannot use a card that is less than 512mb or more than 4gigs for the Magic Memory stick. So you'll have to buy a new one if you need to re-hack your PSP.

The Pandora battery can be made from older phat psps and I believe some of the slims, although certainly not the newest ones.
If your battery ever was a Pandora battery, it isn't now. It'll have to be put into that mode again.
It's far more likely that a Tool battery (an alternate battery which is just swapped in for the purpose of modding the psp) was used. So you can either buy a Pandora battery online, or find out if you can make one with your particular model.

The Pandora battery places the PSP in a sort of 'Factory mode' which allows (on most systems) for the modification of the PSP's flash (the onboard firmware container).
A psp is modded by overwriting or changing it's internal firmware so that it becomes 'unlocked' and allows for things it wasn't intended for by sony.

Since it was already modded, it means you can mod it again.
Follow the first guide by larryj (or w/e his name is) which is under the ultimate sticky on this board.

Hope that helps a bit ^.^

Ah thank you, that helps me understand the concept of the pandora battery a bit better

So now my question is, under that guide, for the Creating the Pandora Battery section, do I follow the guide for Original Firmware or Custom Firmware?

Assuming whoever modded this PSP used a specific battery to mod the PSP in the first place, then replaced it with a normal, I assume I do actually need to buy a Pandora Battery and use it to mod the PSP, correct? sigh, if that's true :)

Anyway, are you also saying I can't use this 8GB memory stick anymore? Isn't that a bit weird though? Since it was actually working before I updated the firmware, I thought it'd still work for creating the Magic Memory Stick.

you don't have to buy a new PSP. You simply need to find someone else who has a psp running a custom firmware and you can make a pandora battery. Or just buy the Datel one. Simple as that.

If you're following a guide you need to follow the instructions for the original firmware because that's what you have now.

Also you may want to keep an eye on the latest development's going on with the gripshift exploit. That will be your ticket with 5.02 to downgrade without pandora. THey don't have a downgrader yet but its only a matter of time now.

Alright, I understand perfectly about the battery now. Though I previously missed the fact I could borrow someone else's modded-PSP to manually make the battery, so thank you for pointing that out :) I suppose I'll take a look around to see if anyone has one before I order the Datel battery tool.

I'm still worried about my memory stick though. Is there anyway to know if my 8GB will work before getting a pandora battery? Obviously I can't do anything to hack the PSP right at this moment, so I figure it won't hurt to find out as much as possible. (It's a Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo btw) Seems worse case scenario is, I need to get a 4GB version and switch to using that permanently, though a quick search online seemed to reveal working 8GB magic memory sticks in existance, so I'm still holding onto my last string of hope. Please don't crush it :)

First thing first, sorry for the double post. I'm making this post from campus the following day now and don't have the PSP with me, so please further excuse me if I'm missing some key information about my PSP.

I did a bit more reading, and more importantly, I found out about dark alex's PSPwiki and read up a lot of stuff that really helped me understand my situation better.

I want to outline what I think I have to do, if anyone can let me know if it's correct or not, or I'm still misunderstanding things, it'd be great if you can let me know.

1) I obviously need a jigkick battery. Anyone have a recommendation if it's better to buy the actual Datel Tool Battery or the Service Battery Tool? (Those links are legitimate, right?) I'm not sure if my battery can be converted or not, since I don't have it in front of me at the time of this post, so maybe it's safer to go with the Tool Battery itself afterall?

2) I need to create a magic memory stick but can't with my current stick. I plan to buy a real 256MB memory stick to turn it into a magic memory stick purely for modding purposes. If I leave my current 8GB stick exactly the way it is now, would I still be able to use it as I previously did before I updated the PSP?

Btw, I think my current stick is actually a fake one. That just means it won't be able to turn into a magic memory stick, even if it was within the size limits, right?

Finally one last request concerning the magic memory stick. Rather than the "smallest capacity", I'm looking for the "cheapest option". Seems 256MB is actually rather hard to find these days :P

Does anyone have any recommendations for a Canadian on where to look? :P I'm browsing the online site for a Canadian franchise (Futureshop) and the cheapest they have is a 4 gig sony card for 29.99. I guess that beats paying 20 dollars online with a 7 dollar shipping charge for a 1 gig card or something, but still, I wouldn't know what to do with a 4 gig gard after :/

I'd reccomend the datel if your not comfortable with making your own or w/e. I'd also recomend a 1 gb stuck, I'm in canada too eh and futureshop has em cheap. It does not need to be sony as both of mine are sandisk and work fine. I'm glad you actually took the time to do some research!

I actually just hopped over to Futureshop just now and browsed their available memory sticks which were all expensive stuff :P (cheapest was 49.99) I was advised to come back on a Friday to see if they had any new sales for their memory sticks but I went over to BestBuy instead and found a couple cheap memory sticks. I ended up getting a Sandisk 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo (SDMSG-1024-A11) for 21.99. *self-shoulder-pat*

Out of curiosity, how much did you get yours for, Poggie?

So now I just have to get the Datel Tool Battery. I think the Codejunkies site I linked to was available to US citizens only, but a quick search online revealed a site called ModSuppliers that seems to ship to Canada just fine. Before I order that one, does anyone have any suggestions on any other stores that might be cheaper than 26.27 (+$7.40 for shipping)?

Well, dkplee I got my 1 gb memoery stick about a year ago for 24.99, on sale at futureshop, we just got a bestbuy so that wasn't an option then. I also have a 4gb which came free with a friends sony ericson phone. But that sounds like a great deal. Is your sandisk card a green one? I don't know of any stores selling the datel tool, I made mine manually via a friends psp(he didn't even know his psp was modded, I noticed and did mine too!)

Ah, lucky you :) Not many of my friends even have a PSP. :/ I'm trying to get my sister to see if she has any friends with modded PSPs before I give that online store a try. Hopefully I can get away from having to buy it since it's around 40 Canadian dollars after shipping.

And yeah, the memory stick I got is green. Not a problem, I hope?

Two weeks isn't a problem for me, especially when it's free. :P

I did think about returning the memory stick I bought from Bestbuy and getting a cheaper stick from this site, but I'm suspecting the ones here are all fake, and won't be able to create the Magic Memory Stick. I think I'll order only the battery, but will wait after I can contact one of my friends who seems to have a modded PSP. :) Cept he moved to Hong Kong a while ago and I don't think he's been back, but it shouldn't hurt to ask, maybe he knows someone or something.

Just a final update here. I spoke with my sister and we ordered the battery from dealextreme just now. I'll probably return sometime in 2 weeks to let you all know how it works out. :)

And a giant thank you to those that helped me out with explaining stuff to me or pointing me in the right direction for where to find the cheap stuff!

See you all again in about 2 weeks ;)

I'm just writing to tell you all I have the PSP modded in my hands now :)

I followed the guide and managed to install 5.00 M33-4 without any problems (though I had to download a file wirelessly to complete the install at one point which I thought was weird, since the guide didn't mention it anywhere)

Anyway, I immediately tried to run some of the downloaded games on my previous memory stick, and encountered an error (game could not be read or something). A few searches on the site helped me solve my problem, and I went to the recovery menu to set the UMD mode to the M33 driver and it works now. Would've been nice if this was part of the guide too ;P

Though I have a question now, mostly just for curiousity. What would be the difference between setting the UMD mode in the recovery menu or just hitting SELECT on my PSP when I have it on and changing it there? It seemed to work both ways, and it'd be easier to just use the SELECT method I think.

And another question is, I at first assumed I would need to set the UMD mode back and forth between normal mode and the M33 driver mode if I want to switch back to playing UMD games. Seems it was not the case. (My sister own a Crisis Core UMD that she's currently halfway though playing) Does anyone know if I ever need to change the UMD mode back again?

Thanks all again :)

One final question.

Is there any drawback to renaming a .cso or .iso file on the PSP? I'd think no, but would rather not make a mistake and finding out about it after I screwed up :P

(I'd rather not double post but I can't find the edit function if it exists :/)

1) select does the same thing. Before the select option you had to do it the recovery way. Do it what ever way you want.
2)Don't need to change back to normal umd, Can keep it m33 forever:)
3) iso/cso--dont matter(as far as I know a cso is a compressed iso, correct me though if I'm wrong)
