I am trying to convert an .avi to mpeg using tmpgenc, all the usual problems, wrong codecs, not unzipped properly.

The we get to the actual encoding, it works fine until about 17% (average)of encoding then the system freezes.

Is this a common occurence?
On opening task manager it shows me the CPU is running at 100% is this to be expected?

I am running an Athlon 1400XP chip with 256 MB of ram, 20 GB hard disk, Windows 2000.

Could this be a heat issue? or is it just the fact that the CPU is over stressed?

Any help on this would be most appreciated.

Regards,

Paul.

Had problems myself like this. If you CPU is under a lot of strain then more heat is going to be generated. If you can try some sort of hardware monitor to see what temperature your cpu is running at. Replaced my heatsink and all the problems disappeared. When it freezes and you reboot open up your bios and check in there for a monitor too, this can also be tried when you first turn the machine on to see a comparison between the two stages.
