Advice, please.

1. I plan to get a newer video adapter card some day in the future. For now, would a separate TV/video input card be faster or more powerful than my ATI Radeon 64MB DDR for input from my VCR?. The separate cards seem to be in a price range I can afford.

2. I think I want to get the Pinnacle 9 editing software. Could someone compare Nero 6 with Pinnacle 9?

3. If it is more versitle, which version would you recommend? I'm interested in internal PCI cards.

I am heavy into Photoshop and graphic/sound fun and want to sharpen my project skills and will soon be needing this technology for school projects as well.

Thanks, Sam

There is No real choice here as Nero 6 and Studio 9 do 2 seperate Things, Unless you are Talking about Nero Vision Express?? Either way Studio 9 is the Much Better Program but in no way a High end Program ,More of a Consumer oriented Program But this is probably what you are Looking for so i"m sure it will suit your Purposes ,There are Many Capture Devices out there some better than others and the Radeon VIVO card you have isn"t a Bad device and it"s Quality is About the same as Most Good Quality TV Cards you Might be Looking at...What Kind of Money do you have in your Budget for a Capture Device???And is the Highest Quality your Main Concern when Getting a Capture Device???
If you are Just Looking to Spend under $100 then your Best Bet is a TV card with one of the New 10 Bit Decoder Chips Like the "MSI TV@nywere" or the "Asus Tuner Card" or one of many other new Cards with the 10 bit chip, it is usually easy to find out if the TV Card you are Looking at has a 10Bit decoder Chip because they usually make it a selling Point...If you have say $200 to $250 to spend then you can get a Very High Quality Device Like a Analogue/Digital converter like the Canopus AVCD-100 or the Canopus ACEDVio...These are Good devices and produce much better quality than a TV Card and there are less problems useing these devices....Well good Luck ...Cheers

Thanks for the reply...

Is there a capture card that has a TV tuner included? I don't own a TV and would like to use an internal device for that as well as input VHS. That is why I would like a card separate from the video adapter. Am I totally confused?

Yes, $200 is about my limit for hardware. Software I'll save up for.

So, what exactly does Pinnacle 9 not do that a high end program would? It is possible that I should be looking for a different software.

Well The Really High Quality Capture Devices don"t have a TV Tuner Attached so you would have to use an External TV Tuner Like a Cable Box or the Tuner in a VCR, If you get a Device with a Tuner Attached you you mostly be relegated to a TV Tuner card which will Not Produce the Quality of a High end Analogue/Digital Converter so you have a Choice between a TV Card which would Be Much cheaper which would Have a TV Tuner and a Composite/RCA Input and a S-Video Input so you can hook up a VCR or DVD Player and a Cable Signal or Antenna for TV Reception ,Or you can get a High Quality Analoge/Digital Converter which would Cost More and Produce Much Highesr Quality captures But would Only have a DV firewire Input for a Digital camcorder and a S-Video Input for a VCR or DVD Player and a Composite/RCA Input for a VCR or DVD Player so if you wanted to capture TV Signals useing one of these Devices you would have to Tune in the Chanels useing a cable Box or VCR.....
Pinnacle Studio 9 has a Lot of the same Features of High end editors it is Just that these Features aren"t of the Highest Quality as a More Professinal Program Like Adobe Premier or Vegas video 4 but the Program is Definately good enough for someone to learn on..I have Been Trying out Studio 9 for the Last couple weeks and it does have a Lot of Features but It is also a Little Bit Buggy because it is such a New program but I guess it is a Good enough program for the Home user as Long as you aren"t expecting to make a Hollywood production and it will work with most Capture devices Like your Basic TV Card to your More High end Analogue/Digital converter......
I would Probably suggest since you are very new to all of this that you get a Simple TV Card which you can capture from a VCR or from a Cable or Antenna Signal, You can get a fairly good Quality one for well under $100, Like this one would be a Good Choice:

But it is Just one of Many 10 Bit TV Cards...Cheers
