Well, assuming the MPEG-2 you are referring to is from a DVD, you can use DVDx (http://dvdx.sourceforge.net/).

No, not DVD. An mpg2 file , in this case created from capturing VHS tapes. Not sure I want to go with DivX now. Goal is to preserve perhaps 100 hrs. of family
videos spanning last 16 yrs. I want best "save" quality practical. Having extreme difficulties determining simplest method, considering capture is in realtime for each hour of tape. Then more time for burning to CD as VCD? , or DVD. Either way, seems I'll have to cut tapes into manageable sizes to match format. I had hoped to capture entire 2 hr. tapes(oldest ones)...then "shrink" the mpeg2 just enough to burn to DVD, but neither Showbiz or Roxio has easy means that I can find to do that.

Well, I would suggest you go with DVD if that is an option open to you. Take a look at TMPGEnc and TMPGEnc DVD Author -- these two apps will allow you to change the bitrate and thus the amount of video you can put on a DVD. As always, the more video you put on the disk the lower the quality.

There are some good guides around here for both programs.

Thanks....looked at TMPGEnc-free version, and handful of other DVD tools. Go blind scanning options, and really have no need yet for such complexities. "Keep it simple" they say. Easiest just to capture in proper-sized files so they are "burn-ready" to CD or DVD??
By the way, more problems than time for now. ASPI driver which was recommended (several sites), I think stops with OS Win2000. Could that be a problem. I cant even burn a VCD right now that will work on DVD players.
