I had an issue a few months ago with this while trying to burn dvds. Anyway, the issue then was that it had slipped into PIO mode and that was the cause.
Not too long after that, my PC broke down and I only was able to get it fixed yesterday. Anyway, I now have a new processor and I tried burning a DVD for the first time since getting it back and I am getting the PMA failure again, but it has not slipped into PIO mode and I am using new Verbatim media that I bought at the same time I got the PC fixed. So if it's not poor media or PIO mode that's causing this PMA failure, what could it be this time?

Do you have a log of the burn?

Sure do...this particular time I used DVD shrink because the file was already converted and ready to burn. The first part of the session, it rejected my brand-new Verbatim disc, so I used a Phillips instead.

I don't see a reference to 'PMA Failure' on the log.

To get Nero out of the picture, go back to using the Verbatim disks instead of the CMC/Philips and use Imgburn to burn it.
You can insert a blank and check the 'Test Mode' box and it will simulate the burn.
Set the burn speed by clicking the 'Device' tab.

Many burners don't.

I tried 2 different types of media for the Nero burn, first the Verbatims and that's when I got the 'Disc not writeable. Insert writeable disc.' message and tried a Phillips instead.
On the ConvertX log, I only tried the Phillips one for that session, (from about an hour ago) Last night I got the same story with both Verbatims and Phillips.

Update: I think I finally solved the problem, I had my first successful burn with no drama..
Anyway, I just kept googling and trying this and that, and I eventually came across an old thread in this forum :
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/332674
I compared that person's log to mine and it looked like that could be my problem too. I uninstalled DAEMON tools and tried again, first using ConvertX, that failed, but I tried again with Nero, and it worked perfectly. Hopefully that will be the end of it :D

Yes, it was, I've had it on this PC for probably about 18 months. I looked at my old logs from last year and it looks like that was the problem then too. The other fail logs from November were after I had several failures and it slipped into PIO mode, but I have a few saved from just before that and the virtual drive error is in those.

So you figure that the PIO was really a symptom of the problem being caused by the virtual drive - fixing the DMA merely set it up for the next time.
Quote: CR3208T WXP430M G: CDRom2
Is that the virtual drive in question?
I use 'Virtual Clone Drive' - a freeware that is extremely simple and has never caused me any grief.
glad you got it sorted out.
