I am trying to get my computer to run better. It is very slow at start up but continues to be sluggish opening up not just the internet pages but also computer programs. I have downloaded and ran many different programs to help me. I have ran virus detectors, disk cleaners. windows cleaners. I orignally thought my computer was sluggish due to hdd space so i deleted a bunch of stuff. I brought my free space from 1gb to almost 25gb. progress yes but no change in my computer. I come to think my problems lies in a 5yr old computer that has a bunch of junk on it and/or software conflicts.
How do I find out what is conflicting with what? Am i even on the right track here? I have been trying to figure this all out on my own instead of bothering everyone when there are ACTUAL problems other people need help with, but i think i am just digging myself into a bigger hole. I rean Belarc Advisor and here are the results:
i hope this isnt over kill:)

I will try to help. First thing i would do is get more Ram this in it self should make a big improvement i recomend 1gig. This should help the Os run smoother and programs. Not really sure how many antivirus programs that u have running if you have more then 1 this could cause problems i know because i built a computer for my mother inlaw and had spyware doctor on it and avg antivirus caused big problems. I would also do 2 other things i use perfect disk defrag program and i do a defrag 1 a week. Also i use a program called register booster which scans your registry and finds errors and allows you to fix them. Also allows you to defrag the registry. Hope this helps good luck.

First, upgrade the RAM. Your PC is "choking on it's own vomit."

The Dell Dimension 2400 has 2 DIMM slots and can be upgraded to a maximum of 2GB memory (2 x 1GB)

I just bought 2 x 1GB PC3200 for $19.95 after rebate so it does go on sale, you just have to watch for it.

Also, get rid of all the unnecessary crap software that Dell bundles with their systems. The first one that should go is all that worthless Adobe Photo software. (disregard. Already gone I see) That brought my sister-in-laws PC to it's knees untill I killed it.

You won't know if there are any software issues until you upgrade your RAM since everything is running on swap space (HDD) right now.

Thanks for your help - however my computer crashed last week. Error in registry. I believe I deleted something important. I don't know what specifically, all I do know is that a fews days later my computer was turned on - windows bar came up and loaded and then the blue screen with registry error. I was lucky enough to install operating system on top of what I already had to get my documents in pictures. I then reformatted HDD. I am running AVG now. I havent decided what spyware/malware to download. Any suggestions? I also heard that defraging and compressing files make the computer sluggish. Is this only if you don't do it often? My system is running alot faster. I have not downloaded all the real arcade/game house games. I know I will eventually becuase my kids are driving me nuts. So I will upgrade my ram - (thanx for that)
There are alot of people that search the web on my computer - I wouldnt put it past them to visit the x-rated sites. I am pretty sure I got a bad virus .. what suggestions do u have to protect my computer - besides the obvious of not visiting these sites at all?

Who ever said that defraging you computer slowes it down was wrong compressing files how ever is a different story. Perfect Disk is a software by Raxco that you will have to purchase. I will say this if you do not defrag in over a year it will take a long time but this should not be a problem because you just formated you hdd. Here is the link for you i beleave they give you like 30days trial.

As for antivirus i use bitdefender i had a few computers get viruses when i had Avg so i do not use them anymore if it happened once ok but like 3 times. Here are 2 links that can help you choose what version you would like.

Bitdefender also gives you 30 days to try there product with no restrictions i believe. Also you can put it on 3pcs for 1yr for only $29.

Hope this helps and Good Luck

I do not know if you know this or not but you should occasionally deleate your cookies and temporary files. How you do this is when on the internet in the upper right corner click on tools then click on internet options on the general tab under browsing history click delete if you are not concerned about loosing you browsing history or any passwords that Ie has saved click deleate all if so just then click delete cookies and delete files. Oh also bitdefender has antiphishing and antispyware built in.

ok thanks you guys. I really appreciate it. What do you guys think of cyber defender or windows advance care(they recently change there name and I don't know it right off hand). I had these both before i would prefer windows advance, but they didnt detect all my viruses. I just want to make sure what ever software I have will detect and fix problems or threats. Am I asking for too much :)

also I take it that the best software is NOT freeware? I tend to want to use freeware if I can.
