Ok, I have 2 hd .MKV files on my desktop. They stream to my PS3 (choppy because it's wireless) but at least the PS3 recognizes them as video files and tries to play them as such.
So, I put the 2 .MKV files on a DVD, popped the DVD into the PS3 and tried to play them from there - no files found.
And if I highlight the "Data Disc" there's no 'display all' when I hit /\ Options.
Any idea on how I can get these 2 .mkv files to either play from the DVD or copy them from the DVD to the PS3 HDD so I can play from there?

The .mkv files won't appear because the PS3 doesn't support them. Since .mkv is just a container, there are a plethora of video and audio files that can be stored in them, some of which the PS3 undoubtedly can't work with. Besides that, it's got a lot of options and add-ons and stuff that the developers probably just decided to axe.
Anyway, what you'll have to do is remux it to .m2ts or (if you want soft-coded subtitles and chapters and other DVD-like stuff) Blu-ray folder using tsMuxer.
If you're doing the latter, then you might have to re-encode using Avisynth + MeGUI, as well, to preserve a 16:9 widescreen ratio.
That said, try muxing it to .m2ts first (if you just want the video/audio) and see what the results are.
If you want the subtitles and stuff, then let me know what your video resolution is - 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 720, etc. - as well as any other info you think might be relevant (like video/audio codec, etc. etc.).

Weird. It'll play if I stream it using PMS.
VLC PLayer says it's video stream is: codec: avc1
Resolution: 1920x816
DIVX converter won't converter it. I can convert to divx using iSkySoft Video Converter, but only to 1280x720.
Ok, Allok MOV Converter (made for movs but one of the best darn converters out there for ANY other format as well) will let me convert to divx and keep original resolution. Only 2500kbps video bitrate though, but that's a lot better than the standard 768kbps most Divx is encoded in.
It's just that encoding these 2 files which equal 7.94GB is going to take forever. I wish Sony would just release an update for the PS3 allowing it to recognize anything in an .mkv file I mean it's got it's own o/s (the only console that does I believe) so why not expand it's playability. Anyway, I"m just venting at Sony right now.
Ok, so anyway, to sum up then, the PS3 can't play .mkv files and probably doesn't even recognize the .mkv extension making it even possible to LIST the files.
I'll just have to convert everything to a format the ps3 can play.
It's weird that when I stream it though, it'll actually list the .mkv file on my PC. And it'll play it (alhtough it's probably re-encoding it on the fly).
Since it won't even list the .MKV file on the dvd, if I copied it over from the PC to the PS3, would it list it then? I'd hate for it to copy, have it NOT show up, and loose 7.94GB of HDD space on my PS3 with 2 files there that I can't delte because it refuses to list them.
I've got one more trick I'll try.. I'll make a Music, Photo, Video subdirs on a DVD and put the .mkv files into the video and see if it will list it then. Although I'm guessing it won't. Because all my divx files in the root dir of a DVD list/play just fine on my PS3.

Can the PS3 read DVDs formatted UDF ?? the mkv files were both over 2gb so I had to make the DL DVD a UDF disc. Maybe that's why the PS3 couldn't read the files on the disc but could read them off the PC?

You don't have to re-encode anything. Since the video is an AVC stream, you can simply re-mux it to .m2ts using tsMuxer.
That'll save you a lot of needless re-encoding time.
As for UDF DVDs, they should work just fine.

Ok I'll try tsMuxer to get it into .m2ts Converting to 1920x1080 DIVX (@ 2.5Mbps video bitrate) took just over an hour for the full movie. If tsMuxer can do it basically as fast as just re-writing a new file, that'll be MUCh better.
Ok, tsMuxing it right now into .m2ts file. Going much faster than reconverting. 'Will reply with outcome of output file and if it plays.

Hm.. .I thought it was going to give me a single filename.m2ts file that I could play. Instead I ended up with 2 files:
Star.track_1.264 (4.35 GB)
Star.track_4.sup (6.53 MB)
I can almost guarantee without spending the time to try, if I put these 2 files on a DVD and popped it into the PS3 it wouldn't know WTF to do with 'em.

Ok now I changed the output from .ts to .m2ts and I got a .m2ts file... all great and fine... BUT WITH NO AUDIO!
I hate this program already!

Uh... that is... huh...
Well, what did you do? "Add", click on "M2TS muxing" as output, then click on "Start muxing"? I don't know anything about the .ts output, so I can't help you with that option.
But as for the audio, what type of audio is it? I know that tsMuxer gets a bit iffy about certain types of audio.
But don't hate the program. It's a great kid. You've just gotta nurture and luv it.

Ok, apparently tsMuxer can't find the audio track in the first video. The movie is split into part1/part2 (2 .mkv video files) It finds the AC3 track in the 2nd part, not the first. Gave some error about unrecoganized track.
However, VLC Player, and Nero Showtime both play the part1 file with NO PROBS and with sound. So it's a problem with tsMuxer, not the file.
So I giveup. Allok MOV Converter converted both .mkv files with sound to DIVX format so I'll just use that. :) The only drawback is time (over an hour to re-encode to divx, compared to 2.5 minutes for tsmuxer)

Hehe, well I'll always TRY tsMuxer first, but this was my first attempt with it and it failed :) Well, it did half... recognized AC3 audio in the 2nd video, didn't recognize any audio in the 1st video (and since these 2 videos make up ONE movie....) But I'll give it a go in the future and see if I can find some more stuff that it likes.
