After several hours of frustration trying to figure out why Click to DVD on my Sony VAIO would not allow me to burn a dvd from my hard drive, including talking to three Sony agents, the fourth agent finally figured out that I could not burn a dvd using Click to DVD unless it was BOTH captured AND encoded (from avi to mpeg2, in my case) using DVgate Plus. I had previously captured a VHS tape to my PC using DVgate Plus in conjunction with the ADVC-100, and converted the resulting avi file to mpeg by using a trial version of MainConcept Mpeg Encoder.

DVgate plus took almost twice as long as MCME to convert the file from avi to mpeg, but that file (2.4 gb) was about half as large as the mpeg file (4.6 gb) created by MCME. Does that mean that the trial version of MCME converted the avi to mpeg1 instead of mpeg2?

When I used Click to DVD to burn a dvd of the mpeg2 file it took 62 minutes to do so.

My questions:

1. Was the time it took DVgate Plus took to convert the avi file (18.1 gb) to mpeg2 (2.4 gb) -- a little over an hour -- slow, average or fast?

2. Was the time in which Click to DVD took to burn the dvd of the mpeg2 (2.4 gb) -- 62 minutes -- slow, average, or fast?

Would I be better off buying a dvd burner software to speed things along? That way, I won't have to be stuck using Sony software to both convert and burn files. If so, which one is recommended?

i have a sony vaio as well, and i know how the click to dvd software can get frustrating. but your questions about DVgate Plus taking 18.1 gb to 2.4 gb, thats seems like a pretty average time, and Click to Dvd burning DVDs is really slow (which is why i never use it). but it all depends on your Burner speed and/or dvd media speed (DVD-RW is alot slower than DVD-r)

I have a Sony vaio rs 422x (which came with an oem Pioneer 106D burner) and I use Record Now Max 4.5 and DVD Shrink exclusively. I just started burning a couple of months ago and I have had only few coasters (faulty media or stupid mistakes)with over 150 successes.. So far I haven't had a DVD That I couldn't back up...

Most of the programs Sony preloads for burning is either slow or not user friendly. Invest in a good burner like Record Now or Nero and forget about what sony gives you...Just my opinion...

I also have a VAIO and I've used Clone DVD and DVD Shrink. Also, I use DVD Decrypter for Ripping. I'm using a Pioneer 103 (yeah it's old) which does a great job backing up DVDs. In my opinion, DVD Shrink is the best software because it's free and it has an easy interface. Plus, you can reauthor DVDs which is great if want back up a large DVD and keep the quality high.
