Tonight I've been watching An American Carol with my family. I had copied the DVD with DVD Shrink. First we watched three trailers on the disc, and they all played fine. Then we watched the movie, which also played fine. After the movie we went back to the trailers, and were able to successfully watch the third trailer, but when selecting the first and second, the disc seems to freeze and the player says the disc is dirty. It is also important to note that the DVD was in the player the entire time, never being removed until after trying to watch the trailers for the second time.
I took the DVD up to my computer and tried to open it with DVD Shrink, but I get the "Cyclic Redundancy Error" message.
What the heck is wrong with the disc? It looks clean, and afterwords I washed it, I wiped it with a radial disc cleaner, and still doesn't work.
Is this some kind of copy protection by Big Brother? Or has my DVD player just damaged the disc?
It could be a few different things causing your problem. Did you rip the movie to your HDD using DVD Shrink or a more up to date ripper such as DVDFab or AnyDVD? Second is what media did you use? High quality media such as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, or Sony make a huge difference in the quality and longevity of your back-ups. So if you could provide a little more information in regards to your process, it would help in the diagnosis greatly.
The disc was a Playo DVD+R, and yes, I ripped the movie to my storage drive as and ISO with DVD Shrink. Main problem is though, the player could read the trailers with no problem at fist, but later couldn't, even though the disc hadn't been removed from the player.
I would definitely agree with ZoSo, as I stated good quality media is a must. You should also think about changing the role DVD Shrink plays in your process to strictly transcoding and update to a better (kept up to date) ripping program such as DVDFab HD Decrypter. It is free and will be more able to handle any newer protections thrown your way. If you would like to see what is available and others are using, click the second link in my signature. It contains an abundance of info on backing up your videos.
All you folks talk about is quality, quality in your media, I have been using Staples, Hp, Sony & other media for years with no issues, no coasters unless it was my mistake. How do you arrive at your answering this media question?
