Is there a good way to remove the paper label from
a disk without damaging it?

Hehehe, you having playback problems by any chance ??
Lay the disc in a saucerfull of lukewarm water with a squirt of washing-up liquid mixed in. Leave it to soak for a while, then CAREFULLY peel the bloody thing off, the hardest part is getting the residue gum off, but a bit more soaking and thumb-rubbing should do the job

And remember to let the disk dry out PROPERLY
(3 - 4 hours in a reasonably warm, ventilated room should do),
as ANY moisture at all when the disk is played is not good (just 'coz you cannot see any moisture, don't mean it ain't there - remember, the disk can spin at 4,000 RPM) - moisture inside a drive is NOT GOOD!!
