Do I need an Xbox to flash Hitachi v59 drive?

In the tutorial it says to have the drive connected to the xbox's power supply then the SATA to the computer. Is it necessary to have it connected to the xbox power supply or can i connect it to the SATA controllers power supply?

You can use the 360 to power the drive or you can use a connectivity kit that will allow you to use the molex connector in your computer for power with on/off functions and ejects functions. Also with a Hitachi 59 I would highly recommend using a DVD connectivity kit because it will put the Hitachi into "mode b" for you. With Hitachi DVD drives, they need to be in this mode b to read/write firmware. If you are using the 360 to power it, I believe you have to do the 2 wire trick. Just google XBOX 360 DVD connectivity kit. Look for ones that have mode b in the details since you own a Hitachi drive. Good luck.
