After downloading, I like to rename the video files and move them to an external hard drive. However, when I do this they can no longer be seeded. Is there a way so that these can still be seeded with the new location/file name?
Thanks.

Most clients offer a feature that allows you to move the data after it is finished. Then you don't need to do anything as long as you and hold off altering the file name.
I think what you want to do will dilute and fragment the torrent. There is safty in numbers. 5 seperate seeds of the same item will not survive as easily as one. People will have to deside wich to choose. Most will choose the torrent with the most seeds and not yours with 1 seed and no peers. Chances are you will never get any action on your new torrents. Maybe you enjoy having torrents peter out at 80-90% because no one is seeding it. Creating a new seed from old material is not paying back. It is sowing the seeds that will weaken the torrent.
Do you REALLY want to do that just because you want to change the file name?

I think what is meant is that moving a completed torrent is fine as long as it's still accessible to the client, changing its name will create a new file that no one will see and will no longer seed.

why do you need to rename the torrent? if you want to move the file to another place for storage jusn unrar the file and put it some where else, but if you change the name of the file in your torrent clinet you will not be able to seed the file.

As far as this goes for me, I once stopped and renamed a file because of menu purposes with it's name appearing in the menu. This wasn't a rarred file and, probably my mistake, but renaming it back still wouldn't let it resume seeding. Should have made a copy to rename.

I get somewhat "conflicted" but this as well.
Since I have storage space "to burn", I make a copy of the file and rename it, and leave the original file up "to seed".
I torrent a lot of foreign files and sometimes the filenames are "filled" with foreign characters, some to the point where some English programs won't recognize the name.
Bottom line:
new location - fine, you can update the location in your torrent client
new file name - problem, the original torrent will no longer be applicable for you as a seed and you will need to re-distribute the torrent for it to be of any use.

Thanks for most of the responses. They have confirmed what I had intuitively thought. I have set up uTorrent to change location of the file to my external hard drive after download is complete. For now, I will not alter the file name.

Indywar, that was a wonderful question! Your solution is the same as mine. I don't copy or alter the file till it has been stopped. The disk space problem is solved without any downside. Your ratio will be paid off much faster by remaining in the original torrent.
ashwin88, no problem! This was a very important discussion. I am sometimes more rude than I ought. People break torrents all the time without meaning to. It was helpful to discuss the problem because it is not obvious. Maybe a few torrents will be saved because others will read this dsicussion.
