Mini DV to avi using movie maker

I used the Movie Maker software of XP to copy the video from my mini DV (Canon mv630i) to my PC. The avi output for only 3 mins was more than 600MB. This means that huge space is needed for a 2 hours movie. Is there a way to use less hard disc space?
