Bad Pandora Battery?

Ok so I've gone through every CFW thread I could find here and I still can't seem to get my PSP modded. I purchased a Pandora (Tool) battery and I've created a MMS (both on a 2GB and 4GB MagicGate). All I ever get is a black screen... when placing the tool battery in, the power lights up but the screen is black (which is ok)... when I pop in the MMS though, nothing happens. I've already updated the PSP to firmware 5.02 but from what I read this shouldn't matter if I have the tool battery.

Did I receive a bad battery? Or am I doing something wrong when creating the MMS?
