I'm going to try to make a long story short. Basically my husband and I got jipped from some craigslist seller of the 360 elite. Long story short we bought it in November for about half of the retail they claimed it was brand new only played twice...yadda yadda yadda. Well we got the E74 error. Being that it wasn't purchased through a store it wasn't under warranty. Should've been a red flag from the start.

So I was on here all day yesterday trying to temporaily fix his xbox until we could purchase a new one when we get tax return. I went to try the penny method and upon taking the xbox and motherboard apart discovered that they already had pennies there. Boy was I ticked.

So the secondary code I got was 1033 which thanks to a post in this forum said it was this could mean a CPU/GPU problem. So I checked them out and whoever put the thermal paste on there was extremely sloppy. It was all over the place and barely there. Basically it looked like it was in places in shouldn't be.

So my first question is... is there anything I can do to get his xbox working for at least a few more weeks? Should I go ahead and clean off the paste and reapply it?

My second is we already have the 120GB hard drive that works just fine still. Since I can't find anything on the net. What is the difference between the consoles themselves without all the extras that they come with. Since we already have everything, but a working console.

Thanks so much for any help! I'm pretty handy when it comes to assembly and directions. I learned what everything is on the motherboard and how to properly take it apart. And for future reference--lesson learned on buying from craigslist.

Basically I looked last night over all the options on here. I was just wondering if it was worth it to try to reapply the thermal paste or not? Or if it was worth it to try. Other wise I'm going to toss it.

Sorry to hear about your 360. I've fixed some 360's with the E74 error. To be honest, sometime the fix works for several months, sometimes it lasts for a few days. Just like you, I also bought a 360 with e74 for my 7 year old son. I fixed, it usually lasts 3 or 4 days then the error strikes back. Basically, I need to reflow it over again and the console would work again for 3 or 4 days and so on. I don't really have to replace the screws or anything, I just need to loosen'em up a little to perform the reflow (overheat) and that's it.

Short answer to your question is yes. I think is worth it that you try to clean up the thermal paste and apply new one. You might get lucky.
Also, try to replace the X-clamps if you haven't done so. If the X-clamps have been replaced with screws and washers, then just do the reflow.
