I have both Roxio and Nero but as far as I can tell, when I try to use either one of these products to edit a video (such as remove the beginning and end), I must change the format (encoding), bit rate Etc. I want to be able to edit a video with the end result being identical to the original except that parts have been edited out. What's the best / least expensive software I can use to do this.

Why would you have to change the bit rate in Roxio? What bit rate is the source material?

@attar ? thank you, the original happens to be AVI.
@GrandpaBW ? I was under the impression that both Roxio and Nero do this. I have more experience with Nero because Nero is easier for me to understand. When I try to edit a movie using Roxio, I tend to lose patients and become aggravated. However, I might try printing out instructions like I did with recording an LP onto a CD. Hopefully I can figure out how to do this with Roxio ? if Roxio does it like I said.
Average bit rate 762 Kbit/s
Resolution 640x352
Frame rate: 23.976 fps (41 ms)
