If this is the wrong forum, please excuse me and advise where better to post this query.

I've a Pioneer DVD-R. Playing a DivX (AVI) disk sees the signals (naturally) appear on the AV output sockets and connecting a monitor
lets you see them. But connecting another device e.g. VCR or DVDR blanks the signals. But only if it's a DivX programme, ordinary DVD or user setup screens are fine.
My question is, if the signals at the output terminals are at standard AV levels, why is there this difference and what is it?

Thanks if anyone has any details.

I'm not clear what device is outputting the video and what device is playing it.

Is this a DVD player in a PC or a standalone unit?

What you describe could possibly be a PAL video signal being fed to an NTSC device.

The device playing the disk is a Pioneer DVR-650HS.
I'm connecting the composite video output and audio out sigs to the
line in on a Pioneer DVR-720H (although I don't think this is critical as connecting to VHS tape gives the same results).

I presume the signals are PAL because NTSC causes a slight increase in picture size, and the TV re-syncs. This isn't happening. The feed can be viewed quite normally - it's only when you record that you lose the signal. And - again - only with a DivX programme. You can, e.g. record the Disc Navigator screen - then as soon as press Play, it's gone.

I initially thought it might be copy protection but the AVI file is a home made test.

If the 720 line out is standard composite video, what changes when you play DivX? If it's not composite video - what is it?

I wrote to Pioneer about this but never got a reply.

If the 720 is playing into the 650, are the symptoms the same.

I tried this with a Panasonic DVDR using a Philips player with a DivX source and saw no problem.

Sadly I can't test for that; the 720 won't play DivX.

That's interesting. You'd expect no problem. I'll look even further into this.
Thanks.
