Hi there,

I have a little problem which I hope some of you more frequent posters can help me with.

I have ripped 2 films to my Hdd, Shallow Hal and The Others (both Region 2)

Shalow Hal is 3.9GB and The Others os 5.1GB (sizes with vob extras ran on both fims in IFOEdit)

Heres my problem:

Shallow Hal is 3.9GB and the film length is 1hr 49 Mins
The Others is 5.1GB and the film length is 1hr 30 mins.

So how can a longer film (Shallow Hal in this example) be a smaller file size than a film (The Others) which is 15 minuites shorter???

I am confused I hope someone can shed some light on this for me.

Cheers

The others is probably at a higher bit rate than shallow hal. It could also contain more audio tracks. Ive seen dvds bit rates as high as 9500kbits per second. I dont know why they put bit rates that high when there wouldn't be a massive difference. If you need to fit it on a dvd-r disk then you should get an encoder and re-encode it.

I am re-encoding, and yes they are figures with only the English audio included in the vobs with no other audio / subtitle included.

Cheers anyway

How is Shallow Hal only showing as 3.9gb. I'm using DVD Decryptor and its coming up as 7.3gb in iso mode. I'm new to burning so please bear with me.. The instructions I read said to select iso mode. burn to harddrive.. then burn to dvd.

You may have edited something before ripping it like a different codec.

procnull: Your edition might be totally different than Totteham's -- remember that generally speaking USA, Europe and Japan all have totally different versions of the same movie. And he's also probably speaking of just the movie, without menus & stuff.

Tottenham: The magic is in bitrates. Basically you can put around 250 hours of video on DVD, if you just drop the bitrate into ridiculously low numbers. But then again, there's a minimum bitrate set for MPEG-2 that can be used with DVD players, so not quite, but still something like 5-7 hours per disc is totally doable. I suggest you read this:
