I bought swap magic 3.6 for my slim PS2 (v14) in August along with a fliptop. Both swap magic discs only loaded two or three times out of all the times I tried, and instead just kept bringing me to the browser and saying the disc couldn't be read. It always made a horrid spinning, grinding sound as it did. The PS2 ran everything else just fine, so I figured it was just some bad discs.

So recently I ordered another set of swap magic 3.6. Neither of them make grinding noises like the last set, thankfully. So far, the CD version runs like a charm, but it's a different story for the DVD. I still keep getting the "disc cannot be read." What's up with this? Is the fliptop not sufficient enough to load the program on my version of PS2?

If everything else is playing fine, then your fliptop must be ok and in place.

I would probably say you just got a bad SM DVD again and would send only it back for replacement.

I do know you have to make sure it is pressed down on the spindle firmly.

Ugh, bum disc again, huh... Is getting bad SM discs common or something? I just find it hard to believe I purchased 2 different sets and experienced the same problem.

Yes it does seem to happen quite often for some.

Do you have another PS2 or a friends PS2 to try it on?

If your sure your laser is good and you have no problems with any other discs, then I am sure that is the problem.

You could try cleaning your laser, take a q-tip, dip lightly in "rubbing alcohol", press gently but firmly in a circular motion for about "30 secs", then using a dry q-tip do the same for about 6-8 secs.

I'll try that, thanks. Would I be able to determine if the disc was faulty if I tried it on a non-modded PS2? I don't know of anyone who's made modifications to their PS2.

Yes it will load on an unmodified PS2

The need of blocking sensors is to play the backup.

The Swap Magic disc should load on any PS2.

Apparently it was a defective disc; I ran it on my neighbor's fat PS2, and it couldn't read the disc either. Bummer that it doesn't work, but I guess it's better than the problem being my PS2 instead. Thanks for your help!

sorry newbie in the room

but um, since when do faulty discs make 'horrible' spinning grinding sounds? usually they points to something physical or a dying ps2

although you DID say other stuff works fine. I'm curious though, why people buy the flip-top since the ps2-slims work fine without them

all you need are those crappy plastic bits that you can buy seperately to block the 3 sensors (which i freakin found out you don't need them, you can use anything around the house) i.e i used blu-tac for the bottom right hand corner which blocks the sensor but the lid still closes on it

the cd-spring thingy i can sticky tape, the other sensor is harder though as its located on the lid joint

but i've seen vids on youtube where they unscrewed the ps2 to reveal a little switch and taped it down shut, thus the lid doesn't need to close down (they did it for the PSone backup swap WITHOUT DISCS, which i reckon screws up the dvd motor as it is still spinning)

my advice as a noobY:i think its not a disc thing, and i think you wasted cash buying more then one, although they DO get scratches easy. I suggest try using a NON flip-top option, make sure nothing fell into the little hole i.e undernearh the lazer lens

All his other discs play fine.

If the PS2 laser is having a helluva time to read a disc , it can make noises.
Swap Magic discs if not fitted properly on the spindle will not work, and need to be replaced, which is what he is doing.

Not everyone wants to void their warranty/and or take the PS2 apart to tape down sensors.
