Wii bricking/homebrew question.

So I installed homebrew on a 3.4U Wii, after that I realized I can't unpack wads on a 3.4U wii, so I downgraded to 2.2U (in hindsight should have stuck with 3.2U but I think the problem would have still been there), popped in Mario Galaxy, it auto-updated and bricked my console. I replaced that console with a new one, and I'd like to try it again, I am just afraid of that happening again. So, two questions: 1. I am 99% certain that it was the downgrade that caused the Wii to brick, should I be 100% certain of this?
2. If I unpack wads on a 3.3U, then upgrade to 3.4U, will I lose the wads I unpacked?

Ok, first off: It was not necessary to downgrade AT ALL. You can install wads and everything if you install IOS16. Which you have to have done to downgrade in the first place.
Secondly, how did it brick the console? Black screen when you tried to play a game? Wouldn't read games at all? Wouldn't start up at all?

You should downgrade to 3.2 and install starfall to skip updates. You probably had a ntsc wii and a pal Galaxy or vice versa and updated system. NEVER do any updates if that is the case. That is what bricked your system.

If the console had *asked* me to update, I wouldn't have, but as soon as I clicked 'play' on mario galaxy, a screen came up, said "Auto-updating", and before I could even get out of my seat the update was done, restarted, and no video signal detected, couldn't connect to the controller (with sync).
Really, all I want to do is install a few cool wad packs, then update to 3.4 and forget about that. I don't want to lose access to Wii Shop either, there is plenty of stuff on there I want as well (and certainly more in the future). I also don't want a modified firmware on the machine, which if I understand correctly the homebrew channel and wad manager/wads are all soft.

Did you even bother to read the countless guides on softmodding the wii correctly or did you make up things to do on your own??
This is the guide you should have followed from 3.4.

Right, I used that one but apparently got an outdated download (hence 2.2). Anyway, I am wanting to be able to unpack some wads without altering the firmware and sticking with 3.3U, is this possible? I really just want to leave the firmware alone and do this entirely soft from 3.3.

@Nels419
Updating from an out of region game generally dosent fully brick the console, it will semi-brick. I'm not sure what happened with the first wii that the SMG update killed it.
And saying 'stay on firmware 3.2 with starfall forever and just skip all updates' is not a real viable solution. Eventually they're going to want to play new games and wont be able to on firmware 3.2.
@Anbesol
To answer your original question, installing 3.4 wont remove or break any previously installed wads, just prevent you from installing new ones.
As I said before though, if you just install IOS16 on the wii after updating to 3.4 you'll be able to keep installing wads. IOS16 isnt a firmware hack either, its an official nintendo firmware patch that's applied in an unusual way.
Finally, you can keep using the shop channel and all online services no matter how much homebrew you have installed on the wii. None of them check for any homebrew, wads, or custom firmwares whatsoever.

When in this topic did i say to stay on starfall forever??
It is the recommended solution NOW. It plays every game NOW. When that changes, months or years down the line,the scene will come out with something else for us to use.

This is incorrect information. I can play all backups just fine on 3.4U so why would I need to be on 3.2? Read the sticky and run the Oct. 23rd fix if you are over 3.2. Plus, you won't be able to play any new games that come out on 3.2 without updating anyway. Your fix is of the past young skywalker....

Iceman , If u installede the wii 3.4 after i wont play certain games , i testet it myself and i also downgradet my own wii because of it.
Also ALL games will work on 3.2 as u can simply remove any updates on them .. No problem at all... 3.2 is the best to stick with these days .. But everybody have there own prefernce i guess :)

I have over 20 games and all work fine. What games are you having issues with on 3.4?
